During our Holiday visit, at a lull before dinner, I’m on my dad’s laptop looking up cars. And yes, I’m looking up allroads, internally groaning at 30 automatics and zero manuals. My dad, proud owner of five VWs and Audis in his lifetime, looks over my shoulder.
“That’s what you’re looking at, huh?”
“Yeah, I just think about them in my weaker moments.”
“You’re going to be a poor man.”

No he didn’t burn you. He’s warning you! (and yes I run VW blood too) Dad loves you!

You should’ve replied, “At least I won’t have a son like yours!” Then watch the perplexed look while you moonwalk out of the room.

He’s right.
Allroads, XCs and most Subarus are still pretty tempting though.

He’s totally right.
VAG cars are a money pit. Or, if within warranty, a time-suck.

How about a 1989 Subaru Legacy RS? I’m sure they are a dime a dozen if you get a importer to ship a 25 year old model to the states....
It’s AWD, Turbo, practical, and much more sexier than an AllRoad.
To Brighten your night, here’s a Subaru Legacy TZ. http://www.japan-partner.com/Auto/26057/Sub…

Your dad had two options,
1) Warn you off, after which you do a slow burn and “ never forget his hurtful and dream crushing words”
2) Say nothing and let you buy it and crush your wallet, after which you do a slow burn and “never forget his not giving you a heads up when he knew better”
You could also blame reality (and Audi) for the existence of something you desire that is bad for you.

But at least he didn't make you wear a cone

Reminds me of my great uncle that always told us to stay away from German cars. He owned some of the most interesting cars of his era (including examples of cars that would be worth a fortune today) and called M-B, “Merciless Benz”, due to high maintenance/parts costs on his succession of SLs starting in the 50s.
Probably some of the best advice your dad will give you...
